Dr Khaled Sadek removes a deep cyst on the back which has been there for many years. These are common and are known commonly on the face and back. They are removed from our cyst removal clinic in London.
An epidermoid cyst is a non-cancerous growth commonly found on the skin of the face or neck, but can occur anywhere on the body. Just as its name suggests, these cysts occur as a result of epidermal cells, cells from the top layer of your skin a.k.a the epidermis, overgrow in a confined space. The buildup of these cells under the skin results in a “cheesy” consistency and often a pungent odor! Epidermoid cysts are typically harmless and have no symptoms, but people often seek removal due to the appearance of the bump or because the cyst has become inflamed or ruptured. If you have a ruptured cyst you may notice, sudden redness, pain, swelling, and heat around the area, all of which can lead to an abscess forming. Surgically removing the cyst can cure the area, but the entire cyst sac and all of its contents need to be removed to ensure the cyst won’t grow back!

This large sebaceous cyst was initially diagnosed as a lipoma by the patients own doctor. Once the patient arrived to our clinic it was pretty clear that a lipoma doesn't get red and angry, and that a cyst was mostly turning angry.
In cases where the cyst is infected, the wound is packed with a special dressing to help healing. This process can take several weeks.

This patient has struggled with infected cysts throughout his life. You can appreciate some scar tissue behind his ear and should always approach these posteriorly for cosmetic reasons. This healed fairly quickly.
This accumulated quickly for this patient likely secondary to an infected hair follicle. I mistakenly mention "cavity" instead of "capsule" when I'm differentiating between an abscess and an infected cyst. The latter has a capsule where the former does not. Also, at the end of this procedure, I also sent off a swab but I stopped the video before I did that step. This was obviously not sutured closed and was not packed either.
I have had this zit/pimple my entire life! It never fully heals and it is always leaking this white pimple like pus. Skin will grow over it but it will bust easily. I have been tested for everything I can think of and all things are negative. It never gets better or worse. Doctors don't know the answer. What do you think it is?
