WARNING: There is blood on this surgical procedure. Thanks to my patient for sharing his unique growth! Make sure to stay until the end to see the interesting sac dissection! Pilomatricomas also known as calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe is a small benign tumor of hair cortex cell origin. Usually there is a molecular defect in beta-catenin within the lesions. These growths can be one hard large stone like growth or sometimes, like in this instance, they can be a collection of hard pebbles loosely held together with a fibrous lining. They are common in children and teenagers. As the growths increase in size they can become very uncomfortable because of the firm calcifications pushing on sensitive surrounding tissues. The different possibilities of growth always make for a very unique removal every time.
